BEMBÉ DO MERCADO

A famosa e tradicional “Bembé do Mercado” acontece em Santo Amaro/BA e celebra a liberdade. A festa é realizada no dia 13 de Maio e tem sido assim desde 1888 quando a “Lei Áurea” foi assinada pela Princesa Isabel (Cristina Leopoldina Augusta Micaela Gabriela Rafaela Gonzaga de Bragança e Bourbon) decretando o fim da escravidão no Brasil. A festa é um grande terreiro de Candomblé aberto ao público, que começa no mercado municipal da cidade e se encerra na praia, quando os filhos e filhas de santo lançam ao mar suas oferendas.

That’s a very traditional party from a small countryside town, called Santo Amaro/BA, which celebrates the freedom from slavery in Brazil. It’s called “Bembé do Mercado” and has taken place in that town from May 13, 1888 and yearly ever since, when “Lei Áurea” - a law signed by the Princess Isabel (Isabel Cristina Leopoldina Augusta Micaela Gabriela Rafaela Gonzaga de Bragança e Bourbon) – decreed the end of slavery in Brazil. It has acquired a strong religion essence, which comes from Candomblé; that’s why the party ends in the sea, where the descendents from African slaves offer their gifts to the goddess of the sea.
